Course Configuration

– Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval – 2.5-mile configuration

– 20 turns

– Pit lane speed is 25 MPH

– The first lap of each HPDE session is a reduced-speed warm-up lap

– After the checkered flag, drivers must reduce pace and allow the vehicle to cool down before exiting

Track Experience

Track Experience participants will have the opportunity to drive their own vehicle on the 2.5-mile CMS Roval, taking parade laps while following an instructor-driven pace car. All makes and models are welcome, but drivers must provide a valid driver’s license, insurance, and registration.

Track Experience participants may also have the opportunity to ride alongside professional drivers as passengers on the CMS Roval. Exact Track Experience timing and ride-along details will be confirmed in the final event schedule.

HIGH PERFORMANCE DRIVER’S EDUCATION (HPDE) – RULES & INFORMATION

HPDE participants will drive their own vehicle on the 2.5-mile CMS Roval in assigned run groups based on experience, skill level, and approval. The run group selected during registration may be adjusted at tech or by the Chief Instructor/Event Staff if needed.

HPDE Run Groups and Pricing

HPDE Group / Beginner – $325

This group is for first-time on-track drivers or novice drivers with little or no track experience who have not been signed off to run in a Solo group.

– Track time: Four 20-minute lead/follow sessions in your own car behind a professional driving instructor in a track-prepared Mustang Dark Horse.

– Classroom instruction: Four classroom sessions throughout the day before each on-track session. Topics include racing line, safety, cornering theory, and the fundamentals of vehicle dynamics.

Solo Group / Intermediate – $325

This group is for drivers who already have on-track experience and have been signed off by accredited sanctioning bodies or driving groups, including NASA, SCCA, PCA, BMWCCA/BMW Club, IMSA, SVRA, Turn One, Chin, or another accredited track day group. The Chief Instructor may also approve a driver for Solo.

– Track time: Five 20-minute driving sessions with some passing restrictions.

– Solo is a controlled-passing group. Drivers who do not meet Solo requirements must register for the HPDE/Beginner group.

Super Solo Group / Advanced – $325

This group is for experienced track drivers and licensed racecar drivers who have been signed off by accredited sanctioning bodies or approved driving groups.

– Track time: Five 20-minute driving sessions.

– Passing rules are less restrictive, but point-bys are still required. This is practice, not a race.

– Race cars must have current logbooks.

How to Register

To participate, visit www.www.mustangweek.com, purchase the required Mustang Week participant ticket, and select the appropriate Track Day entry. Run group will be determined in tech.

Additional drivers require separate forms, separate registration, and separate approval for the appropriate run group.

Registration Packages / Check-In

Official Mustang Week registration credentials, event materials, and wristbands must be picked up during event week at an Official Mustang Week event (Mon-Tues) or Mustang Week Registration in the Silver Lot of zMAX (Wed-Thurs). Participants must check in and obtain the proper credentials before entering the facility and before going through tech inspection.

Required Documents for Participants

At check-in and/or tech, HPDE participants should be prepared to present:

– Valid driver’s license.

– Mustang Week wristband and tech card.

– Completed Wheelhouse HPDE Enrollment Form.

– Completed Wheelhouse Track Day Inspection Form.

– Helmet for inspection.

– Race car logbook, if applicable.

– Vehicle for track inspection.

Enrollment, Rentals & Cancellation Policy

– HPDE Group / Beginner: $325.

– Solo Group / Intermediate: $325.

– Super Solo Group / Advanced: $325.

– Garage rental: $75. Garage rentals are available and include truck and trailer parking.

– Helmet rental: $50/day. A $100 deposit is required unless paying with credit card.

– The event runs rain or shine. Adverse weather may cause a cancellation; if that happens, pre-registered participants will be notified.

– Driver must certify that they are in satisfactory physical and medical condition to participate.

HPDE Driver Eligibility

– Drivers must be 18 years old to participate in HPDE.

– Drivers must have a valid driver’s license.

– There will be a mandatory Driver’s Meeting on the morning of the event.

– Passing rules for each group will be reviewed in the Driver’s Meeting.

– No passengers are allowed in HPDE vehicles.

– No electric vehicles.

– Unsafe behavior, repeated spins, repeated overshooting of turns, or disregard of rules may result in removal from the event at the discretion of the Chief Instructor or Event Staff.

Tech Inspection / Vehicle Requirements

– The tech form must be completed before the event.

– Within two weeks of the event, each HPDE vehicle must be inspected by an authorized service facility or by the owner.

– Wheelhouse staff will complete the Track Inspection portion at the event.

– Race cars with current logbooks only need to complete the logbook section of the tech inspection form and sign it.

– Bring your logbook, helmet, and car to Track Inspection.

– It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure every vehicle component is safe and in proper working condition.

– All loose items must be removed from the passenger compartment, luggage compartment, and trunk before going on track. Floor mats must be removed.

– Vehicles must be track-worthy, in good mechanical condition, and free of fluid leaks.

– Brake lights must work.

– Battery must be secured and the positive battery terminal must be covered.

– Tech inspection includes wheels/tires, brakes, suspension/steering, engine, body, safety items, interior, and logbook items.

Car Numbers

All HPDE cars must display numbers on both sides of the vehicle. Numbers must be at least 8 inches high and 1 inch wide, in a color that contrasts with the car, and easily readable by track workers. White shoe polish on windows or blue painter’s tape may be acceptable.

Convertibles / Open-Cockpit Cars

– Convertibles must have OE Active Roll protection and must be approved by the track day organizer.

– Open-cockpit cars, such as Cobras, must pass the broomstick test before driving on track.

– The driver’s helmeted head must have clearance under a broomstick or similar straight edge placed from the roll bar to the windshield frame.

– Approval is at the discretion of the track day organizer.

Helmet & Clothing Requirements

– HPDE drivers must have a SNELL SA2015 or newer approved helmet. Closed-face or open-face helmets are allowed.

– Helmets will be inspected during tech. No exceptions.

– Helmet rentals are available from Wheelhouse.

– Drivers must wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.

– Short-sleeve or long-sleeve shirts are allowed. Natural-fiber clothing is required.

– Race cars with fuel cells require driving suits.

– Approved driving suits, driving shoes, and gloves are acceptable and recommended.

On-Track Safety

– Passing signals and passing zones will be strictly enforced.

– Check tires and brakes after each session.

– Check oil before each session.

– Check lug nuts periodically.

– Listen for any strange or new vehicle sounds and inspect the car before returning to the track.

– If you are about to run off track, use the paved runoff area rather than trying to save the car and causing a spin.

– If you spin or leave the course, use the “both feet in” rule: brake and clutch fully depressed until the vehicle comes to a stop.

– After a spin or off-course excursion, you must come into the pits so the car can be checked by a pit worker.

– Always be aware of traffic ahead, traffic behind, and corner workers at flag stations.

Windows, Sunroofs & Driver Position

– Driver’s side window must be completely down at all times while on track.

– Passenger side window must be completely down or completely up.

– Sunroofs and Targa tops must be on and closed while on track.

– Keep arms inside the vehicle unless giving a passing signal or pit signal.

Passing Rules

– Passing is allowed only in designated areas and only with proper signals, unless otherwise allowed for Super Solo.

– Do not pass unless the car being overtaken signals you to pass.

– Passing signals should be clear and exaggerated, typically with the driver’s arm motioning over the top of the car.
– Do not tailgate.

– If you are holding up faster cars, signal the cars behind you to pass one at a time.

– Do not drag race the passing car to the end of the passing zone.

– Maintain speed or lift slightly so the passing car can safely complete the pass.

– If traffic becomes crowded, drivers may enter the pits and rejoin at a less crowded position.

– Disregard of passing rules may result in expulsion from the event.

– Super Solo drivers may pass anywhere on track with a point-by, but must remain courteous and avoid aggressive passing in corners.

Flags

Flags are the only way corner workers can communicate with drivers on track. Pay attention to the corner stations during warm-up laps. Failure to heed flags may result in expulsion from the event.

– Green Flag: Track is open and cars are running at speed. Passing is allowed in approved passing zones.

– Stationary Yellow Flag: Proceed with caution. No passing. Be prepared to alter your line.

– Waving Yellow Flag: Immediate hazard ahead. Slow significantly and be prepared to stop. Check mirrors before braking hard.

– Debris Flag: Foreign object, fluid, dirt, gravel, rain, or other changed track condition ahead. Adjust your line or slow as needed.

– Blue Flag with Yellow Diagonal Stripe: Faster car behind you Check mirrors and prepare to signal the car by at the next opportunity. Stay on-line and lift slightly to allow the pass.

– Red Flag: Emergency situation. Check mirrors and bring the car to a controlled, complete stop on the right side of the track Stay on track, leave room for emergency vehicles, release the brakes once stopped, and do not engage the parking brake.

– Black Flag with Red Circle / Meatball Flag: Mechanical problem with your car. Drive to the pits as soon as possible or pull off near the next corner worker station if there is a fire.

– Black Flag: Warning to a specific driver or all cars. If pointed at you, come into the pits immediately. If displayed at all stations, all cars proceed to the pits at reduced speed and follow Pit Control instructions.

– Checkered Flag: Session is over. Begin a cool-down lap and be prepared to exit at the next pit entrance.

Additional Items to Bring

– Water and sports drinks; limit caffeine

– Tent or shade covering

– Tarp to cover belongings in case of rain. Nothing may remain in the car while on track

– Chair

– Air pressure gauge

– Any tools or supplies needed to check tire pressure, lug nuts, oil, and general vehicle condition between sessions

– Concessions may be available, but participants should plan ahead
