Car Show Judging Information

Exterior Body Modifications

  • Judges value uniqueness, quality, and craftsmanship in modifications.
  • All seams, body lines, and shaved areas (e.g., moldings, emblems) must be clean and precise.
  • Modifications should appear as if they came from the factory, with hidden hardware and seamless fitment.
  • Metal wide-body kits and custom-fabricated parts earn more credit than bolt-on fiberglass or urethane components.
  • Proper fit and finish are critical—panels, paint, and hardware must meet or exceed OEM standards.
  • Custom, “one-off” parts and fabrication are highly prized for creativity and originality.

Paint

  • A clean, flawless paint finish is essential—free of swirls, streaks, dirt, and imperfections.
  • All painted areas (e.g., engine bay, door jams, trunk jams) must match and be detailed to the same standard.
  • Color changes must be complete, including door jams, engine compartments, and undersides of body panels.
  • Judges focus on execution and completeness, avoiding overspray, tape lines, or mismatched colors.
  • Unique paint schemes (e.g., metallic, candy, two-tone) and custom details (e.g., pinstriping, gold leaf) score extra points if executed seamlessly.
  • Incomplete details, such as missing stripes in door jams, result in deductions.

Engine Bay

  • Cleanliness is Key: Judges expect spotless engine bays; no grease or dirt anywhere.
  • Engine Covers: Remove covers to showcase the entire engine during judging.
  • Modifications and Presentation: Highlight custom, performance, and name-brand parts. Rusty or dirty upgrades hurt your score.
  • Details Matter: Clean wiring, hoses, clamps, and proper installation are critical.
  • Custom Work: Unique or one-off parts (e.g., custom intercooler piping or motor mounts) score higher than bolt-on kits.
  • Supporting Proof: Build books with photos and receipts of modifications enhance your credibility.
  • Rare and Impressive: Rare parts and creative customization (e.g., anodized bolts, custom brackets) stand out.
  • Hood Open: Leaving the hood open ensures your engine bay is judged and avoids assumptions of being stock and dirty.

Drivetrain

  • Documentation is Key: Photos and receipts in a build book help judges evaluate invisible drivetrain upgrades.
  • Performance-Oriented Mods: Judges value upgrades like short shifters, upgraded transmission gears, and reinforced driveshafts.
  • Fitment and Fabrication: Proper installation and function are essential.
  • Upgraded Parts: Includes differentials, clutches, gear ratios, ECU upgrades, and transmission coolers.
  • Purposeful Mods: Upgrades for performance (drag, track, or time attack) add value to your build.
  • Attention to Functionality: Judges want to see improvements that contribute to performance and durability.

Chassis Performance

  • Braking System: Credit for upgrades such as calipers (2, 4, 6+ pistons), rotors (size, type), and conversions (drum-to-disc, stock-to-aftermarket). Properly installed extensive modifications and custom solutions (e.g., custom brackets, twin caliper setups) earn extra points.
  • Suspension: Judges examine struts, springs, sway bars, bushings, and control arms. Fully adjustable suspensions and custom fabrications receive higher scores. Air suspension systems are judged case-by-case, with rarity and customizations considered.

Wheels

  • Cleanliness: Wheels must be spotless, including the inner barrel, center, and bolts.
  • Fitment: Proper fitment to body lines and modifications (e.g., wide-body builds) is critical. Incorrect offsets or rubbing lose points.
  • Rarity & Customization: Rare or unique wheels, custom finishes (e.g., anodized, painted), and designs complementing the car’s theme score higher.

Tires

  • Upgrades Required: Stock tires are insufficient; performance or specialty tires matching wheel sizes are preferred.
  • Condition: Worn, damaged, or mismatched tires lose points. Rare or imported tires earn extra credit.

Interior

  • Cleanliness: Immaculate detailing is mandatory, including air vents, carpeting, and trunk space.
  • Modifications: Judges look for custom steering wheels, gauges, racing seats, and other upgrades with OEM-quality fitment.
  • Materials & Craftsmanship: High-quality materials (e.g., suede, leather, carbon fiber) and custom stitching or patterns earn more credit.
  • Creativity: Unique, hand-crafted components like roll cages, center consoles, or aluminum panels receive extra points if properly installed.

Overall Presentation

  • First Impressions: Judges value a “wow” factor upon seeing the car.
  • Display: Enhancements like props or signage should highlight—not overshadow—the car.
  • Consistency: Presentation should complement the car’s overall build theme and quality.
